Are Rock Lyrics Sexist?

April 5, 2018

I’ve always despised the sexist lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound, which includes the despicable lines:

Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

What a great role for a woman: to lie in bed silently until her man, who’s out on the road seeking public adoration, bestows his presence once again upon her. Is she allowed to eat during her bed-waiting time? Is she allowed to speak once he has returned? We may never know. But it got me thinking:

Words and expressions reveal the basic values of a culture. It’s not all bad – our culture has some good values. For example, the fact that treating peopleĀ humanely means to treat them with kindness and respect implies a deep-seated belief that the nature of humanity is kindness. This belies the common assertion one hears that human beings are basically selfish and violent. Read the rest of this entry »

Pussy is in trouble!

For those not yet in-the-know, we here at Daisybrain have launched a planet-wide campaign to redefine pussy in positive terms. Our definition, currently #11* (out of 122), reads:

Cool or awesome; exciting and new

Example: “That band’s totally pussy, dude! They rock!” Read the rest of this entry »
