Are Rock Lyrics Sexist?

I’ve always despised the sexist lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound, which includes the despicable lines:

Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

What a great role for a woman: to lie in bed silently until her man, who’s out on the road seeking public adoration, bestows his presence once again upon her. Is she allowed to eat during her bed-waiting time? Is she allowed to speak once he has returned? We may never know. But it got me thinking:

Are Rock Lyrics Generally Sexist? Here’s an easy way to find out: Reverse the pronouns! Let’s try it with a few popular songs from throughout the decades:

  • From the hit Elvis song, Baby, Let’s Play House:

(This song reached #5 on Billboard’s Country Singles chart in 1955)

Well, you may go to college,

You may have a pink cadillac,
But don’t you be nobody’s fool…

What Words Reveal

To father a child and to mother a child have very different meanings. Father is used as a verb to mean create or procreate, while mother means to take care of the child after it is born. How can we escape the legacy and expectations of patriarchy when it is so embedded in our language?

Words and expressions reveal the basic values of a culture. It’s not all bad – our culture has some good values. For example, the fact that treating peopleĀ humanely means to treat them with kindness and respect implies a deep-seated belief that the nature of humanity is kindness. Pussy is in trouble!

I had vowed to myself not to write any more posts with the word “pussy” in the title. But events have conspired against such restraint. Our definition of pussy on is getting thumbs down votes! Someone is going in there and repeatedly voting against our pussy!

For those not yet in-the-know, we here at Daisybrain have launched a planet-wide campaign to redefine pussy in positive terms. Our definition, currently #11* (out of 122), reads:
