The Essential Healthy Vegetarian’s Guide to Avoiding Accidental Meat

Here are some hidden non vegetarian ingredients in what you otherwise might assume are dead animal-free supplements and health foods.

  • Gelatin Caps. Thankfully, more and more supplement companies are switching to plant cellulose capsules and seaweed (carrageenan) softgels. But it pays to double check, especially since sometimes companies switch back and forth! Look on either the front, bottom of the container for the type of capsule, or on the back label, under “other ingredients.”

Father-Son Cookbook

My very 2nd Daisybrain post, written in September, 2009, was Father-Son Cookbook. It was my first real post, since the one preceding it was just an announcement that I was starting this blog. It was a short post about how rude a publisher was when they rejected my father-son cookbook idea. Back then, the cookbook was just a loose compilation of letters, emails and recipes. But I am thrilled to my toes to announce that I have just completed putting the cookbook together. It’s now called, “Father-Son Cookbook: A 25 Year Correspondence.”

The “Meat” Shop

The other day, I went a  grocery store that specialized in dead animals. I was shopping for a piece of a dead animal to feed to a meat eating person (an “omnivore”). I found a package containing part of the body of a dead animal. It was covered in sauce, like a piece of tofu. It had been displayed in a refrigerated shelf with various other body parts, next to a tank of giant sea spiders that were still clinging to life. the spiders’ eye stalks had been cut off and their claws were bound so that they wouldn’t cut each other in their desperate attempts to escape. The idea was that people purchased these beings to bring home and cook them alive.
