The word decimate is commonly used to mean, “wipe out,” or “destroy,” as in, “They decimated our team in the first half!” However, it actually means, “to select by lot and kill every tenth man.” It was a punishment invented by the Roman army about 2,500 years ago. When some among their ranks had committed some sort of disallowed act such as refusing an order, soldiers were grouped into lots of ten where one in each group, chosen arbitrarily, would be killed by the others in his group.
